Vorwald, 81, of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019 at 9:45 p.m. surrounded by her family at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Friends and relatives of Darlene may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m., Friday January 11th at the funeral home. Services for Darlene will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, Iowa with Rev.

Dennis Quint Presiding. Concelebrating will be Rev. Aloysius Vorwald.

Burial will be held in St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville, Iowa. Darlene was born September 25, 1937 in Farley, Iowa, daughter of Bernard and Bernice (Oberfoell) Breitbach. She is a graduate of the Epworth High School.

On May 14, 1957 she was united in marriage to Wilfred Vorwald at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Epworth, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 16, 2004. She was employed in the office at John Deere Dubuque Works prior to her marriage.

After her marriage to Wilfred the couple raised their family and worked the farm together between Dyersville and Farley, Iowa until their retirement where they moved to Dyersville. She enjoyed many activities, fishing, picnics, playing slot machines and working with her flower gardens. She was an avid sports enthusiast, she especially enjoyed the Hawkeyes football games.

She was very proud of and loved her grandchildren and family. One of Darlene’s lifelong dreams was to visit Mt. Rushmore which she was able to do in 2016.

She is a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Dyersville. She is survived by five daughters, Lynn (Bob) Lucas of Worthington, IA, JoAnn (Mike) Besler of Epworth, IA, Donna (Mike) Loeffelholz of Dyersville, IA, Karen Rave of Farley, IA and Julie Vorwald of Dubuque, IA; 3 sons, Louis (Catherine) Vorwald of Dubuque, IA, Kenny (Lynn) Vorwald of Petersburg, IA, and Mark Vorwald of Las Vegas, Nevada; 21 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; six siblings, Gene (Rosie) Breitbach of Farley, IA, Betty (Paul) Theisen of Epworth, IA, Mary Westermeyer of Dubuque, IA, Eldon (Mary) Breitbach of Marion, IA, Melinda (Robert) Steffen of Bernard, IA and Sharon (Ron) Schaul of Farley, IA; a sister-in-law, Ethel Vorwald of Placid, IA; and one brother-in-law, Rev. Aloysius Vorwald of Dyersville, IA.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Gary Rave; a brother, Jerry (Mary) Breitbach; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Vorwald, Gary Westermeyer and Rosemary (Thomas) Strang; and two nephews, Mike Vorwald and Steve Vorwald. The family would like to give a special thank you to the doctors and nurses at Mercy Medical Center, to Dr. Ramabadran, Unity Point Finley Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for all the care and support they gave to Darlene.
