Merola, 52, beloved companion, father, brother, uncle and friend, died at his home, on Friday evening, March 22, with his family. David was born on December 5, 1966, and was the son of Samuel and Mary Jane Merola, Hazleton. David was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Rocco Merola, and his paternal grandparents, Salvatore Merola and Lucille (Esposito) Merola, Italian immigrants who came to America in their early teens.
He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Agnes (Kessel) Zillig and David John Zillig. David is survived by his companion of 16 years, Michele Bartek and three children he loved dearly; David Duane Merola, 32, Ryan Rocco Merola, 30, Hazleton, and Kayla Ann Merola, 25, Philadelphia, children of former wife, Kelli Rosato, Hazleton. David is also survived by three siblings; Samuel Rocco Merola Jr. & wife Rose, Allentown, Mark J. Merola, Hazleton, and Elena Timko & husband George, Sugarloaf.
He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews; Virginia Herzog, Allentown, Samuel Merola, Del Ray, Florida, Michael Merola, Annapolis, MD, Ashley Merola, Annapolis, MD, Lauren Merola, Sugarloaf, Lauren Timko, Newtown Square, Erin Timko, Annapolis, MD and Georgie Timko, Sugarloaf. David graduated from Hazleton High School in 1984. He worked in production in Stroehmann’s Bakery for over 14 years.
He then obtained his Commercial Driver’s License and was gainfully employed as a skilled Commercial Driver for the last two decades. He was also actively involved in the family business, Vacuums Plus, Peace Street, Hazleton. David was a caring and kind person, and loved to make people laugh, with his dry and quick sense of humor.
He was meticulous with everything he did – a true perfectionist. He was passionate about collecting, building and modifying remote control cars. David was very adept at carpentry, plumbing, masonry and automotive.
He most recently enjoyed spending his free time restoring his C Class Mercedes. David loved fishing with his children, collecting baseball cards and rare coins, and vacationing in Ocean City, NJ with his family. He will be missed greatly by all who had the honor to know him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:00 AM in Most Precious Blood Church, 131 East Fourth Street, Hazleton. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at Vine Street Cemetery, Hazleton. Friends may call at Most Precious Blood Church on Thursday morning from 9:00 AM until time of service.
