Obituary for David J. McMahon Green Island – David J. McMahon, 76, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Albany Medical Center with his loving wife by his side. Born in Troy on November 3, 1942, he was the son of the late Leo and Helen (Benac) McMahon. David grew up in both the north side of Waterford and Cohoes.
He was taken in and raised by his Uncle Bill and Aunt Bea after the untimely deaths of both his parents. David left school early to join the United States Marines and served his country very proudly just before the Vietnam War. Once he returned home from service, he began working as both a clerk and a manager at Shop Rite.
When not at work, he loved to go hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking gourmet meals, crafting beautiful works of art with oil and watercolor, spending time tending to his garden, sharing a dance with his wife, looking after his feline friends, listening to Sinatra, and taking trips to the Racino. David was an absolute pleasure to be around.
He had the ability to brighten any room he walked into. He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him. David is survived by his adoring wife, Maureen (Maloney) McMahon, his cousins; Jack and Jean Benac, and Robert and Irene Benac, and by many loving cousins and friends who he enjoyed spending time with whenever he had the chance.
David’s family would like to thank the staff at the Neurological ICU unit at Albany Medical Center for their utmost care that they provided to him in his time of need. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 10 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Watervliet. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Friends and relatives are invited to a visitation on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 from 3 until 6 PM at Parker Bros. Memorial Funeral Home, Watervliet. Those who wish to remember David in a special way may consider a donation to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave.
