Obituary for David J. Crandall SARATOGA SPRINGS – David J. Crandall of Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 25, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Born February 9, 1932, he was the son of the late Stewart and Grace (Matteson) Crandall. Dave was born in Oneonta, NY and was raised in Laurens, New York.
He graduated from Laurens Central High School and received a BS degree in education from Oneonta State Teachers College. He received a master’s in school administration from Columbia University and also did his doctoral work there. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and proudly served as a communications specialist stationed in Formosa.
Upon returning home, he married Barbara (Kennedy) and started a 32 year career in education. After teaching in the Scotia Glenville School system for two years, he went to work for the Schenectady City School District, where he was a guidance counselor, assistant principal, principal, finishing his career as assistant superintendent in charge of personnel. He was respected for his fairness and integrity by students and staff alike.
In his retirement he became a renaissance man perfecting the arts of soup making, bread baking, woodworking, music, personal investing, golf, and became well versed in computer skills. For over 45 years one of his biggest enjoyments was spending time at his camp on Lake George with his family. His winter home became New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where he made many dear friends and honed his golf and tennis skills.
His biggest delight was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved attending their sporting, dance, and musical events. He supported all, talented and untalented, and didn’t judge.
However, he did enjoy a victory. He never met a sweet he didn’t like. His particular favorites were Hershey’s dark chocolate bars, Dove ice cream bars, Tate’s cookies, Stewart’s coffee shakes, bear claws from Bread Basket, Boston creme doughnuts, and Frosties.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Barbara, his sister Joan McLaud, children Terri (John) Snow, David (Claudia) Crandall, Lori (Mark) Jenkins, Lisa (Bob) Cheney, and Robert (Meredith) Crandall, 15 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Donna Crandall. The family would especially like to thank Dr. John Pezzulo for his years of care and compassion that improved the quality of dad’s life and extended it by many years.
In addition, we would like to say thank you to Dr. Andrew Coates, and the entire staff on C5 at Albany Medical Center for their extraordinary care in dad’s last month of life. A memorial mass will be held at 11 am, Friday February 1 at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumite Road, Loudonville. The family will informally greet friends from 9:30-11am prior to mass.
Inurnment will be at Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Donna M. Crandall Foundation, 50 Traditional Lane, Loudonville, NY, 12211. Condolence book at ParkerBrosMemorial.com.
