David R. Shipe, 22, of the Slate Lick section of Freeport passed away on Friday, November 9th, 2018 while in the company of family, at Allegheny Valley Hospital, Natrona Heights after a hard fought and lengthy battle with cancer. David was born in Pittsburgh on January 31, 1996, a son of Nancy K. (Kulikowski) and Peter E. Shipe, of Slate Lick. David was a 2014 graduate of Freeport Area High School where he was an outstanding student and a member of the soccer and track teams.

David was very involved in high school science fairs participating in local, state and national science competitions. He also was selected to participate in the PA Governors School for Science and Technology at CMU in 2013. David is a 2018 Allegheny College graduate in Biology and Environmental Science.

David has always been passionate about science particularly natural history, evolution, genetics, ecology, and sustainable agriculture. While at Allegheny College, David’s studies focused on sustainable food production, forest management, bird ecosystems as well as the relations of religions to ecology. David worked as the student manager of the aquaponics center for 3 years.

Dave was an avid board game player, enjoyed horseback riding, walks in the woods and sailing. He loved to spend time with his friends and family. David was a member of St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Freeport.

David is also survived by his brothers, Peter Joseph “PJ” Shipe, of Brentwood; Christopher M. Shipe, of Monroeville and his sister, Katherine V. Shipe, of Monroeville. Paternal grandmother, Rosemary O. Shipe of Duquesne and his maternal grandparents Thomas A. & Dorothy A. Kulikowski of Cabot, his best friend, Jennifer Torrence of Brentwood and the loyal yellow lab, Finn. David is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John J. Shipe. Family and friends will be received on Friday, November 16th from 1-3 & 5-8 pm in the Redmond Funeral Home Inc. 524 High St. in Freeport, PA. Everyone is invited to gather and attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, November 17th at 10 a.m. at St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Freeport, PA with Father Ronald Maquinana officiating.

A private family burial will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery Freeport, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Allegheny College David R. Shipe, Class of 2018 Scholarship in Environmental Science at allegheny.
