Jeffrey (age 84) died on February 20, 2019 of complications from cancer at his home on Route 14 in East Calais with family members at his side. He was born on September 25, 1934 the son of the late Robert L. and Barbara (Willis) Jeffrey. He attended schools in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1952.
He later attended UVM. In 1953, David enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War in the 49th Fighter Squadron Radar Services. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
David held positions with the Central Vermont Railroad, Montpelier Post Office, and Francis Murtagh Ballantine Distributing. In 1960, he started the Jeffrey Insurance Agency with Nationwide Insurance Company and retired from the insurance business in 1992. He was a longtime member, received his 60th year pin last year and a past commander (1970) of the American Legion Post #3 in Montpelier.
He coached the Legion baseball team for many years. David was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and spend time on the shooting range. He also enjoyed spending time in his “big boy toys” room, working on model trains, planes, reading and reloading ammunition.
He was a proud supporter of the NRA and built himself up to a benefactor member throughout the years. He was also a “die-hard” NY Yankee fan. One of his greatest pleasures were his Sheltie dogs, Charlie and Cassie, both of whom predeceased him.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Barton and Phillip and an infant daughter. His survivors include his children, Robert K. Jeffrey (Carol Fox) of Helena, MT; Allen W. Jeffrey (Pam) of Wilmington, OH; Mary L. Robinson (Earl) of Wytheville, VA; Stephen D. Jeffrey (Tracy) of St. Johnsbury, VT and Jason Jeffrey of East Calais, VT; also his devoted girlfriend, Heidi Amato, who gave her love and attention to his final days; his 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. His sisters Martha Murphy (Bud) of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Laurie Jeffrey of New York City, NY and brother Paul Jeffrey of Houston, Texas.
His former spouses, Jane (Blodgett) Cookson, Aurora (Ducharme) Jeffrey and Elizabeth (Belanger) Jeffrey, along with several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held in the spring. A committal with military honors will follow at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, VT.
