David’s Obituary David Ward Spencer died Thursday, December 27th, 2018 at home with his family. He was born July 14, 1934 in Woodward, Iowa to Merrel H. Spencer and Lorena Grace (Nall) Spencer. His last year of High School he worked at Freeport Rug and Linoleum installing carpet and tile.

David married Mary C. Fritzenmeier on June 25, 1954. He enlisted in the Army and was stationed in California. He got his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in chemistry and Math from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He used the skills learned from his high school job to work his way through college and was able to graduate debt free. He taught chemistry at Lena High School for 1 year. He then worked in the lab at Micro Switch for several years where he developed colored translucent light switches with no hot spots.

Then Highland College opened up and at last he found his niche. He taught organic chemistry and Math there for thirty years. Surviving are his wife, Mary C. Spencer, his son, James A. Spencer, his brother Kenneth L. Spencer and his grandchildren, Aaron and Benjamin Walz, Brandon Guzzardo, Nicole (Guzzardo) Shocklee and Talia Spencer.

He also has 1 great grandchild, Jace Shocklee. Preceding him in death are his parents, his sister, Jean Tucker, brother, Archie and Thomas Spencer. 3 daughters – Deborah Walz, Laura and Kathi Spencer and 1 grandson Adam Walz.

Services will be Saturday, January 5th at St. John’s United Church of Christ at with a visitation at 10AM services following at 11 AM. You may leave a message of condolence for the family at www. walkermortuary.com.

A memorial has been established in his name for St. John’s United Church of Christ.
