Mrs. Deborah Susan “Debbie” (Gabriel) Macri, 63, a resident of Mountain Top, passed peacefully into Eternal Life Saturday evening with her family at her bedside in Celtic Healthcare Hospice inpatient unit, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, following a year-long battle with cancer. Born January 26, 1955 in Union Township, Huntardon County, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Doris Gabriel. Educated in the New Jersey schools, she was a member of the 1973 graduating class of the Battin High School, Elizabeth, N.J.
She then attended Slippery Rock State College from 1973-1975. From 1975 until 1980, Debbie worked toward her Bachelor degree in education from Kean College in New Jersey. While at Kean, she excelled in softball, earning the rank of “All Conference Softball Player, Division 1” She later continued her education towards her vocation at the former Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre, where she earned two masters degree in education.
Until her retirement last year, Debbie was employed for eighteen years by the Crestwood Area School District as a Health and Physical Education Teacher. Prior to that, she worked with the Keystone Job Corps Center in Drums from 1980 until 1986. She is remembered by those who knew and loved her as being a wonderful loving mother and grandmother to her family, who was so grateful to meet her newest grandchild, “Little Nate” before her passing.
Debbie was also an avid sports enthusiast, being a big fan of the New York Giants. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mr. James P. Macri on April 12, 2012. At the time of Jim’s passing, the couple shared twenty-four years of married life together.
Left to mourn her passing are her children Christopher of Everett, Washington; Jennifer L.M. Hogan and her husband Nathaniel IV and their newborn son, Nathaniel V of Woodbridge, Virginia; Step-Daughter, Carrie Macri-Tereska, her husband Adam and their children Sereya and Kiara of Mountain Top; Several brothers and sisters-in-law; Numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial funeral service for Debbie is planned for Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. from the Wilkes-Barre Heights location of the John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc., 281 East Northampton Street. Relatives and friends may join her family at the funeral home for visitation and remembrances from 5:00p.m. until the time of services.
