She was the daughter of Hannah (Anna) Monte and John Hamilton Miller. She died in Florence, SC, January 28, 2019.
She is predeceased by her two brothers and a sister. Her family moved to Camden, DE and then to Salisbury, MD, where she was graduated from Wicomico High School. She attended Averett College in Danville, VA.
She returned to Salisbury to work at then Salisbury State College. In 1969, Dr. Walter D. Smith, then President of Salisbury State, was asked to start a new college in Florence, SC. He chose Miss Miller to begin a planning office on the grounds of what was the University of South Carolina at Florence.
In 1970, the new college became Francis Marion, attaining university status in 1992. Dolores played an important role in the development of the new college as well as the growth in the Florence community and beyond. She co-authored “Quantum Leap” a story of three Colleges (the history of the growth of College of Charleston, Francis Marion and Lander College in South Carolina) and served as Executive Assistant to the President of FMC and Secretary to the SC Board of Trustees.
She was a longtime supporter and office holder of the National and Province IV Altar Guilds of The Episcopal Church. Her many endeavors included serving as President of the Florence County Museum Board, as a founding Board member of House of Hope, as a founding member of the League of Women Voters Florence, serving as the first female Senior Warden at St. John’s Episcopal Church, and as founding member of St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church in 2012. She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews, Carol (Vaughn) Horner (MD), Kimberly (Stewart) Crouch (DE), “The Jersey Girls” Charlotte “Cuddles” Schmeling, Geraldine “Gerry” Landmesser, Letitia “Letty” (Robert) Hildick, and Bruce (Debbie) Dashiell, Dean (Gale) Dashiell (MD), Benjamin “Ben” (Bill Gordon) Miller, Thomas “Tommy” (Gail) Miller (FL), John “Jack” (Joni) Miller, and Jeffrey “Jeff” (Joan) Miller (DE), and Frances L. Elmore, her housemate and devoted friend.
Dolores’s memorial service will be held at Christ Church on Williston Road (Hwy 327) in Florence, Saturday, March 23, 2019, at 11:00 AM with a reception following at the President’s home on FMU Campus. The interment will be in Salisbury, MD, March 29. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, Attn.
