Donald D. McCowan, 88, of Stuarts Draft and formerly of Arlington, passed away, Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at Stuarts Draft Retirement Community. He was born April 4, 1930, in Washington, D.C., a son of the late Everett and Mollie McCowan. Don was a loving husband, father, pawpaw, brother, and friend to many.

He was retired from the Arlington County Fire Department and served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Coast Guard. He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, football, and baseball and was a Washington Nationals and Washington Redskins fan.

He especially loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and rarely missed a game. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Mae Wren McCowan, three brothers, John, Stewart and James McCowan and his daughter In-law Nancy Dodd. He is survived by his children, Mollie Iseli and husband, Buck of Stuarts Draft, Virginia Coffey and husband, Jeff of Stuarts Draft, Linda Wade and husband, Walter of Fishersville, Bill Dodd of Mira Loma, CA, Steve Dodd and wife, Carol of Smith Mountain Lake, Donald Dodd and wife, Jeri of McKinleyville, CA,; Don is also survived by a brother and a sister: Everett “Tipton” McCowan and Mollie “Sis” Scott.

; his 15 grandchildren, Aaron Dodd, Crystal Dodd, Devon Dodd, Jeremy Hansen, Lucas Dodd, Bethany Reilly, Rachel Minton, Daniel Marsh, Benjamin Dodd, Jessie Dodd, Nathan Dodd, Matthew Sundeen, Jakob Coffey, Lindsay Iseli and Logan Iseli and his 13 great-grandchildren, Sage Dodd, Kimberly Hansen, Jeffrey Hansen, Timothy Hansen, Malachi Reilly, Elianna Reilly, Isaiah Reilly, Mikayla Minton, Kennedy Minton, Tyler Marsh, Samantha Marsh, Joline Marsh and Trevor Marsh. Graveside services, with Military Honors, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 1, 2018, at Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro. Family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 P.M. at Charlton and Groome Funeral home, 619 Lifecore Drive, Fishersville, VA.

Family and friends will then process to the cemetery for the service. Serving as Active Pallbearers will be, Bill Dodd, Steve Dodd, Don Dodd, Matthew Sundeen, Jeff Coffey, Buck Iseli and Walter Wade. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the Stuarts Draft Retirement Community for their care and kindness.
