Obituary for Donald Irvin Haney Donald Irvin Haney, 88, passed away, Saturday, September 22, 2018 at home with his family present. Donald was born January 20, 1930 at home in Mt. Pisgah, Arkansas, he tells the story that the doctor had to come through snow to deliver him.
He was the sixth child of ten children born to his parents, Claude Umphrey and Arrah Elizabeth Price Haney. He attended school at Mt. Pisgah then went on to Pangburn high school graduating in 1948, president of his class.
He was the first in his family to graduate from high school. Donald enlisted and served in the 2nd battalion, 153rd infantry army national guard, Searcy, Arkansas, from November 6, 1950 to may 25, 1956. He was honorably discharged as Sgt.
E-5. On December 23, 1950 he married Helen Inez Johnson. They were married at Helen’s parents home in west point, Arkansas.
He worked and traveled with Safeway for 14 years then he moved his family home to Searcy. On October 1, 1973 he opened Haney’s grocery on the corner race and maple. In 1977 he built the first dandy don’s and opened it in November 1977.
That’s when he became known as “dandy don”. A few years later he built the second dandy don’s. Donald attended Saint Paul United Methodist church.
He loved and cared for his family and extended family. He loved to have fun, especially taking his family to the Memphis zoo, attending the St. Louis cardinals baseball games, taking his grandchildren to the Arkansas razorback games and watching fireworks at his home place, Haney’s farm. Donald always welcomed his family and friends to his home to share meals with him.
There was always plenty of food. Donald has one son, James Wesley Haney and wife Patricia Ann; two daughters Patricia Ann Haney Sims and husband Tim, Mary Frances Haney Vess and husband Roger, all of Searcy. Donald has six grandchildren Marcus Vess and wife Timpy of Edmond, Oklahoma; Jamie Haney Marter and husband Wesley, Bubba Haney and wife heather, Shannon Vess Stewart and husband TJ, Erin Sims Green and husband Josh all of Searcy; Rachael Sims Wolford and husband Marcus of Higginson.
Donald has eleven great-grandchildren Skylar, Ethan and Braxon Vess, Ella and Kate Marter, Layni and Noah Stewart, Eli and Weston Green, Alyssa and Madison Wolford. Donald is also survived by two brothers Claude Junior Haney, Quitman, Ms. and Kenneth Dale Haney, Searcy, Ar. Two sisters Inez Holeyfield, Rose Bud, Ar.
and Winnie Smith, Searcy, Ar. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years Helen Inez Johnson Haney, his parents, three brothers, Charles Haney, Toledo, Ohio, Thomas Haney and Herman Wesley Haney, Searcy; two sisters Juanita Baughn and Lola Jean Childers, Searcy, Ar. and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Wesley Sunday School class at Saint Paul United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Monday, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Saint Paul United Methodist Church.
Funeral will be Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at Saint Paul United Methodist Church. Burial to take place at Mt. Pisgah cemetery.
