Laurinburg, NC Dora Lilias Peedin Phillips died June 22, 2018, after a lengthy illness. Born January 21, 1925, to Isaac and Dora Peedin in Fremont, North Carolina, she enjoyed her life as the baby of five siblings. After being orphaned at fifteen, she persevered to not only graduate from Kenly High School in 1942, but also from the Carolina General Hospital School of Nursing in Wilson, North Carolina.
While in nursing school, she caught the eye of Durwood Phillips after an introduction by her fellow classmate, his sister Doris. She married her beloved Durwood October 18, 1946. Over the years she worked as a registered nurse in various areas.
She was very proud of her nursing degree and loved the time she spent in caring for her patients. She was recognized by her peers and served as President of Carolina General Hospital Nursing Alumni Association. Dora’s deep love for her husband and five children was evident in everything she did.
She and Durwood built a strong legacy of family and love in their sixty-one years together. Their children always knew they were loved by their parents. She was thrilled to become a grandmother to six grandsons and five granddaughters and watching them grow into great individuals.
She also has enjoyed her family continuing to grow with seven great grandchildren. Staunch in her beliefs, she loved her church and the people there. Serving in many areas of the women’s ministries over the years gave her great joy.
When she could no longer live alone, Thomas Memorial Baptist Church was one of her greatest losses when she had to move away. She is predeceased by her husband T. Durwood Phillips, her parents, her sisters Louise P. Futrell and Purcell P. Lamm; her brothers Richard S. Peedin and William G. Peedin. She is survived by her son Thomas D.
