She was 12 days short of her 99th birthday. Dorothy was born to Justin and Lulu Kuntz at the family home in Lawton on May 19, 1920.
Her older brother was Robert Kuntz, Ph D, a U. S. Navy Commander. Her younger sister was Eleanor Kuntz, who worked for 30 years in Washington, D. C. for the National Security Agency. Both of them preceded her in death.
Dorothy came from strong pioneer stock. Her father was born on a poor central Missouri farm in 1885. Her mother was born on the high plains of far NW Kansas in 1883.
There a man could ride 10 miles on horseback and never see a tree. Her mother lived in a sod dugout for the first years of her life. They burned buffalo chips for heat.
Many of their neighbors froze to death in the brutal blizzards and -40F wind chills on the northern high plains. They also had close calls with Cheyenne Indians who wanted to kill settlers intruding upon their land. Dorothy’s father, Justin Kuntz, came to Lawton in 1912.
He had heard about a boom town in southwest Oklahoma called Lawton. He soon became the CFO of the Lawton Public Schools where he served for over 50 years. He was in charge of building Lawton High School 1951-1953.
Kuntz Elementary School was named in his honor. Dorothy married Harold Wilson of Lawton on June 26, 1940. They were devoted to each other in marriage for 71 years.
Harold was a B-29 bomber pilot in WWII. After the war, he and Dorothy returned to Lawton where they lived the rest of their lives. They developed many businesses throughout Oklahoma which provided, directly and indirectly, jobs for thousands of Oklahomans.
In the 1970s they were instrumental in developing Lawton Christian School on land donated from the family homestead. They provided 36 years of support for the school both spiritually and financially. In the 1980s they founded KVRS (the Voice of the Risen Savior) 90.
3 FM Christian Radio in Lawton. Dorothy committed her life to serve God as a youth and happily and successfully spent her life in fulfilling that commitment. Her ministry to her husband and her children demonstrated her deep commitment to her calling.
During the 1980’s, she and Harold worked for the Campus Crusade organization and became good friends with Bill and Vonette Bright. They Chaired the Here’s Life Campaign for Lawton. As part of that campaign, Dorothy hosted a Prayer Luncheon at Cameron University where Vonette Bright spoke on The Power of Praying Women.
Throughout her life, Dorothy was known as a fervent Prayer Warrior and a great Encourager. Her Card ministry kept the post office busy as she never missed an opportunity to encourage someone who needed it. Birthdays, anniversaries, get well wishes, new babies, sympathy, achievements or ‘just thinking about you’ always received a card with a personal note from Dorothy.
She was a great hostess and truly loved any opportunity to share her home with all who passed her way. Her family knows that her Texas Sheet Cake and her Cherry Pecan Ice Cream were The Best! Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, brother and sister, her husband and son-in-law, R Peter Rhea.
She is survived by her four children and their families: Gary Wilson, M. D., and wife Nancy of Edmond, OK; Rick Wilson, M. D., and wife Loyce of Denton, TX; Kaye Haire and husband Curtis of Lawton, and Patti Rhea, of Lawton. There are 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren: Dan and Dana Green Wilson, Hannah, Olivia, Seth, Claire and Jesse Wilson, Oklahoma City, OK; Teri Johnson, Chase and Weston, of Edmond, OK; Mitchell and Ashley Payne Wilson, Brookley and Allison of Argyle, TX; Kathryn Wilson and Matt Schwarz, and Charlotte Mae, of Pagosa Springs, CO; William Wilson of Denver, CO, and Jason Wilson of Asheville, NC; Tricia Haire of Lawton, Tyler, Trevor, Trenton and Tory Waggoner of Cache, OK; Christopher Haire, fiancee Brandi Butler, Adrian and Zane, of Duncan, and Ethan and Deklyn of Cache, OK; Jordan Rhea of Midwest City, OK; Jennifer Rhea of Hoopstad, Free State, South Africa; and Jeffrey Rhea of Austin, TX. Funeral Services will be held at Becker-Rabon Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 2 o’clock p.m. A private family burial will be held under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.
