Dorothy Irene Cavanagh June 1, 1915-November 3, 2018 Dorothy Hazelton was born in Fresno, California. Her family moved to Santa Cruz in 1927. She would later marry Charles Cavanagh, start a family, and enjoy the beach life until moving to Salinas in 1950, where her morning walks were her ritual.

Dorothy’s daughter, Karen(Al) Mortensen and son Dennis Cavanagh have raised their own children under this amazing matriarch. Her grandchildren, Diane(John) Vorwerck, Nancy(Matt) Kelley, Nathan, Brady(Abby Oliver), Eric, and Adam Cavanagh will all treasure her simple, honest, faith based living, and true compassion for Gods gifts of cut flowers, harvesting of fruits, vegetables and walnuts, outdoors/camping, family togetherness, and a strong hug with a firm back pat. Her great grandchildren, Morgan and Tate Kelley, Luke, Hana and Carly Vorwerck, and Harlyn Cavanagh, are lucky to have been graced with the purest heart and soul, frugal lifestyled, and well-traveled woman who held an aspiration for life.

Strong family ties are beloved in her extended family, with Doug and Lynda Olson. Dorothy made time to appreciate the vast beauty around her like the patterns of color in mixed lettuce grown up and down the Salinas Valley. She made time to pick up newspapers for neighbors confined to the boundaries of their home.

She treasured the gift of writing and receiving hand-written notes, letters and postcards from special moments and travels. Her family holds documented history as she saved many mementos. Dorothy built lifelong friendships at Northminster Presbyterian Church, participating in church groups, community volunteer work, and biblical lessons.

Dorothy counted on her weekly visits from special members during her days of being increasingly home bound. Dorothy resided, for the last many years, under the professional and thorough care at Katherine’s Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Her family appreciates the staff support and communications in caring for Dorothy.

Her character and her grace and mostly her spirit will be remembered. Dorothy lived with essence, though quiet in nature, she portrayed a strong motivational to only be the truest of yourself. Her family will continue to honor Dorothy’s memory in their daily lives.

A private family ceremony is being planned for a later date. Donations may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church in her memory.
