Dr. Henry R. “Jim” Silverman, Jr. age 91, a longtime Toledo area physician, died Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania, Ohio. Jim was born in Dayton, Ohio on February 15, 1927 to Henry R. Silverman Sr. and Bertha (Frank) Silverman. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1946 and graduated Summe Cum Laude from The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Optometry in 1950.
He then practiced in Dayton, Ohio with his father for three years and returned to the Ohio State School of Medicine and graduated in 1958 M.D. Summe cum laude. He did his post graduate training at The Toledo Hospital and was in private practice of Family Medicine for over fifty years in Toledo and Florida. He passed the First American Board of Family Practice in 1970.
His honoraries include AOA and Sigma Xi at Ohio State University. Jim was a Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine, Vice Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Ethics Committee at The Toledo Hospital and volunteered at Caridad Health Clinic, Boynton Beach, Florida. He also was a member of the Community Emergency Response Team in Boynton Beach, the Palm Beach County Medical Reserves Corps.
and was a volunteer physician for the Palm Beach County Marathon in 2008. His hobbies included playing the piano, golf, tennis, bridge and most importantly his family. Jim was a member of the Temple Shomer Emunim for many years.
According to Dr. Jim, “I have never spent one day practicing Medicine that I did not enjoy and find fulfilling”. Surviving is his wife, Adair M. (Zimmerman) Silverman and their sons, Henry R. III “Hank” (Cheryl) Silverman and Mark (Lisa) Silverman and grandchildren, James (Molly) Silverman, Stefani (Scott) Silverman, Lana (Darren) Tobin, Daniel Silverman, Benjamin Silverman and Zachary Silverman and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Shaman and Joanne Shaman.
Jim’s family wishes to thank all of his caregivers from home comfort keepers and Promedica Hospice for their great care for last several months and thank the caring staff at the beautiful Ebeid center on Flower campus these last several days and so many others. He was blessed with longevity and a great life and loving family and friends and contributed a great deal to healthcare and medical education here in Toledo since 1958. The family feels very fortunate to have had him in their lives all these years.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at 4 p.m. at Temple Shomer Emunim, 6453 Sylvania Avenue. The family will also receive guests on Monday and Tuesday evening at 3751 Sulphur Spring Toledo Ohio from 6 to 8 p.m. with a brief memorial service each night at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to Ohio State College of Medicine Dean’s Scholarship Fund -313941, Promedica Hospice or Ebeid Hospice, Old Newsboys Philip H.
