Edmund D. “Buddy” Brickell, 72, of Jersey Shore passed away Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Jersey Shore Hospital. He was born in Hillsdale Indiana County, PA, August 21, 1946 a son of Edmund and Irene (Longenecker) Brickell. Buddy attended a Special School in Ohio until age 15 when he moved to Jersey Shore.
He was one of Jersey Shore’s most well known citizens. Fondly known as the “Mayor of Jersey Shore”, Buddy could be spotted up town riding his three wheel bicycle every day. Buddy’s favorite hangouts were Weis Market, Buttorff Hardware, Joyce Braucht’s Beauty Shop, National Sporting Goods and the Fast Pitch Softball Field.
He was the mascot for Motor Mart Fast Pitch Softball Team during the 70’s. In the fall he would patrol the sidelines at Thompson Street Stadium Friday nights rooting and cheering his beloved Jersey Shore Bulldogs High School Football team on to victory. Uptown on Wednesday nights he would set out dozens of neighbors and friend’s garbage cans usually with a quarter taped to the lid and Thursday morning return them safely.
As time passed, Buddy learned the true meaning of inflation and the price went to a dollar! Long before there were Wal-Mart greeters Buddy was the Weis Market greeter and helped anyone who needed assistance with loading their groceries; when the task was complete he would then hold his hand out asking “Quarter”. Even though Buddy was “special” he had the uncanny ability of not only remembering people’s names, but also associating something with that person.
Everybody he knew had a “Buddy” name. He was a member of the Lighthouse Wesleyan Church. It has been said it takes a village to raise its children and townspeople and Jersey Shore is the shining example of this fact when it came to Buddy.
He was and will continue to be so very much loved by the community of Jersey Shore. His survivors include 3 sisters – Debra Paucke of Jersey Shore; Cynthia Mantle of Avis and Alice Bradstock of Wellington, OH along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings Shirley and Arthur.
Buddy’s Memorial Service will be held at 9:30am Saturday from St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 229 S. Broad St., Jersey Shore with Rev. Dr. Kerry Aucker officiating. His Life Tribute Celebration will follow immediately at the Wheeland Center on Poplar St., Jersey Shore, PA.
Burial will be held privately. Buddy’s family encourages everyone attending either of these events to wear Bulldog Orange and Black. In lieu of flowers, in honor of Buddy, contributions may be made to Caleb’s Fund, c/o Jacob Leone, 607 S. Broad St., Jersey Shore, PA 17740.
