Elaine Fay Smithberger June 22, 1930 – February 01, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Upload Photo| Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Sympathy Card Elaine Fay Smithberger (nee: Popa), 88 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, February 1, 2019 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain, following a full and meaningful life. She was born June 22, 1930 in Lorain, Ohio. Elaine was raised in Lorain, graduating from Lorain High School with the class of 1948.

She had made her home in Amherst since 1972. Elaine was employed as a assistant treasurer at the Amherst Board of Education for twenty years before retiring in 1996. As a young girl, she was employed at National Tube as a secretary.

She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lorain where she was baptized and confirmed and sang in the choir. Elaine worked part time at St. John United Church of Christ as the treasurer. Her hobbies included painting, sewing, and watching sports on TV.

Elaine enjoyed spending time with her many friends she made while employed at the Amherst Board of Education. Survivors include her sons Kurt Smithberger (Quyhn Thao) of Atlanta, Georgia, Eric Smithberger (Denise) of Wakeman; her daughter Lisa Shimer (Pat Zilch) of Lorain; her grandchildren Shyloe and Brian Smithberger; her sister Leslie Snyder (Jack) of Elyria; and her sister in law Dorothy Popa. She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-eight years Gerald Charles Smithberger on February 21, 2010; her brother David Popa in 2001; and her parents Felix and Helen Popa (nee: Cendrosky).

Friends may call Tuesday, February 6, 2019, from 5-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave. , Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. John United Church of Christ; 715 Reid Avenue, Lorain.

The Rev. David Rogers, pastor of, will officiate. Burial will be held privately by family at Resthaven Memory Garden, Avon.
