Obituary for Elizabeth DeWolfe “Betty” Hummer PORTLAND – Elizabeth DeWolfe Farnum Hummer, 92, died unexpectedly in Rockport, Thursday, September 6, 2018. Born in Newton, MA on April 30, 1926, Elizabeth (Betty), was the oldest daughter of Marlin D. and Melva Mann Farnum. In October 1927 Betty and her sister accompanied their parents to Japan where their father was to serve as a missionary.

The family lived in Japan until 1940 (1941 for her father), relocating first to Mexico, ME and then to Tenafly, NJ. In 1945 Betty married William E. Finale, an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. They had three children, Linda K. and husband Stephen Broker of Cheshire, CT, Andrew R. and wife Patricia Finale of Chelsea, ME, and Ann E. and husband Brian Filley of Rockport, ME.

The marriage ended in divorce. While married to William Finale, Betty lived for six years on the island of Ponape in the Caroline Islands, now the Federated States of Micronesia. Returning to the U.S. in 1957, Betty and her children lived in Bethesda, MD where she worked for the National Institutes of Health and the newly created Peace Corps.

During this period she completed her undergraduate degree, begun at Oberlin College, at American University. Following her graduation, Betty and her two daughters moved to Honolulu, HI where she was a graduate student in anthropology and education at the University of Hawaii. Upon receiving her master’s degree, Betty taught at Waimanolo Elementary School, as a reading specialist.

In 1971 Betty married Raymond Belknap, and following his retirement from the U.S. Weather Service, they moved to Green Valley, AZ. Raymond predeceased her in 1986. Betty remarried in 1988 to Robert Hummer.

While in Arizona, Betty was active with a local hiking group, volunteered at a local elementary school and at a program providing services to seniors in her community. For 25 years she was a docent at the Tumacacori National Historical Park. Following Robert’s death in 2013, Betty moved to the retirement community of 75 State Street in Portland, ME.

During her four years there, she was an active and vibrant member of the community and developed close personal relationships. In addition to her three children and their spouses, she is survived by her sister Rosemary and brother-in-law Clifford Gilson, brother-in-law Donald Nicoll, grandchildren, Sarah and husband Keith Duffy, Joann Finale, Aaron Finale, Evan Filley and partner Elizabeth Mansfield, and David Filley. She is also survived by four great-grandsons and eight nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister Hilda Nicoll and her brother Hugh Farnum.
