Obituary for Lloyd Marcellous Painter ROCKLAND – Lloyd Marcellous Painter passed away peacefully September 2, 2018 at Bartlett Woods with his beloved wife at his side. He was born November 25, 1923 in Beards Fork, West Virginia, to Laurence Edgar and Maggie Settle Painter. He grew up around the coal mines of West Virginia and attended school there.
He was passionate about sports including basketball, baseball and golf. His earliest job was caddying at local golf clubs. In May 1942, the United States was at war, and despite his youth, Lloyd enlisted in the service but needed his father’s permission.
His father agreed to sign the papers if after three days Lloyd had not changed his mind. Lloyd never wavered as he wanted to do his part in protecting his country. Although he had never seen the ocean he enlisted in the Coast Guard and eventually became a seaman aboard the USCGC Laurel.
The Laurel was assigned to the Greenland Patrol to protect American bases in Greenland, to break ice, and to escort ships with men and supplies along the eastern coast. At the end of the war, Lloyd was stationed at White Head Light Station in Spruce Head. He was introduced to his future bride, Constance Ross, by a relative.
They married six months later. Under the GI bill he completed his education and graduated from Husson College. After college he was employed by a paper company in Winslow.
In 1953 he decided to work for the Internal Revenue Service. Together he and Connie raised four children. They designed and built homes in Waterville, Monmouth, and Owls Head.
Lloyd loved the outdoors and woods in Maine. He cut his own trees and built a board and batten cabin in Lincolnville. Trees from family property were also used to build a new home on Ballyhac Road in Owls Head.
Lloyd was proud to be an American citizen and felt a need to dedicate his time serving the public as an Owls Head selectman; volunteer fireman; town council; school director SAD 5; treasurer of Tanglewood 4-H camp; treasurer, trustee, and deacon for Rockland Congregational Church; President of the Mussel Ridge Historical Society, and Treasurer of the Small Woodlot Owners Association of Maine. He was dedicated to Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as adjutant for American Legion Post #204, Monmouth; adjutant for Kennebec County American Legion and adjutant for American Legion Post #37 in Thomaston. He was elected Commander for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 11545 in Thomaston.
He was also instrumental in establishing a veterans memorial in the town of Owls Head in 2001 and later a memorial at the American Legion complex in Rockland. As an IRS agent he was first officer in charge of the Rockland and Lewiston offices. In 1961 he was Acting Chief Counsel at National Office.
He retired with honors and received the Gallatin Award in 1980. He continued accounting and tax consultant work until 2009. Lloyd enjoyed traveling the country visiting his relatives, especially his children and grandchildren.
There was always an adventure just around the corner. He had an infectious laugh and joy for life. He loved meeting people.
In his later years at Bartlett Woods he liked to sit down by the door to greet anyone who came through the door. He lived a long and full life. One of his passions after his retirement was to work in the woods with his Kubota tractor.
He could often be found cutting, hauling, stacking wood in Lincolnville. In Owls Head he cleared the land and planted fir and pine trees. The trees he cut were planed and used in the construction of his home on Ballyhac Road.
His grandchildren enjoyed riding on the tractor and going “upta camp”. When he could no longer work in the woods he began to walk accompanied by his dog, Stoney, the trails and beaches around Ballyhac Cove in Owls Head. Lloyd also continued his interest in sports by supporting the local Little League, middle school and high school basketball, football, baseball and soccer teams.
He could often be found standing on the sidelines watching the games at Georges Valley and Rockland District High School. He continued attending the games even after his children and grandchildren graduated. Lloyd will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Connie and their children Thomas Ross Painter, Rodney and Kathy Painter, John Painter and Kati Vecsey, and Kevin and Patty Robertson.
He is survived by grandchildren; James and Melissa Painter, Jo and Jerry Portele, Jenny and Sean Gavin, Jeff and Lisa Painter, Thomas Fields Painter, Nick Painter, Kelen Painter, Sarah Robertson and Ron Daniello, Andrew and Maria Jose Robertson, great grandchildren; Ross and Kloey Painter; Reed Painter; Samantha and Corrine Portele; Rory, Neve, Niall and Liam Gavin; Krista Painter, Kailey and Colton Corsetti, McKenna Painter; and Gabriel and Evelyn Robertson. He was predeceased by a grandson, Nathan Robertson and two daughter in laws, Deborah French Painter and Sarah Key Painter. A service honoring and remembering Lloyd’s life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, followed by a reception at 104 Limerock.
Private burial will take place at a later date.
