Obituary for Ellen Loewenthal (Platt) Ellen Louise (Platt) Loewenthal was born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 1, 1929, and passed away in New Brunswick, NJ, on July 28, 2018. She received an A.A. from Packer Collegiate Institute, a B.A. from Alfred University, and a Masters in Social Work from Adelphi University. She was a social worker in both public schools and private settings in New York, and resided in Queens, N.Y. for many years with her husband and children.
She moved to New Jersey after the death of her husband, Herbert. She was also predeceased by her parents and brother. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Fechter of Highland Park, NJ and Rabbi Amy Loewenthal of Keene, NH; Laura’s husband, Robert Fechter and Amy’s wife, Dale Rosenberg; two grandchildren, Arielle Fechter and Michael Fechter; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden Fechter and Holden Fechter.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Loewenthal was an effective and dedicated professional advocate for people with developmental disabilities. She had many interests, including art, music, world cultures, ancient history, travel, and archaeology. Shiva will be held from 5:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Laura Fechter’s home on July 29, and in Brooklyn on July 30 and 31 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. and in Keene, NH on August 1 and 2.
