Elmer “Bud” L. Smith, Jr., 76, lifelong South Bend resident, passed away at 6:57 am Wednesday, October 10, 2018 in his home. He was born in South Bend on July 21, 1942 to the late Elmer and Julia (Hadary) Smith, Sr. On November 12, 1961 in South Bend, Bud married the former Sandra Newcomer, who preceded him in death on September 14, 2011. He was also preceded in death by three sons, Dennis, Billy & Rickey Smith; two grandchildren; three sisters, Maryann Jones, Cookie Smith and Nancy Smith; and two brothers, Eddie Smith and Joe Smith.

Bud is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Kevin) Minder of South Bend and Cathy (Felix) Nordfors of Moores Hills, IN; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley (Jimmy) Ferris of South Bend and Sissy Smith of Mishawaka; and two brothers, Harry Smith of South Bend and Rusty Smith of Mishawaka. Bud served his country honorably in the United States Army. He was a self-employed landscaper until retiring in 2001.

Bud enjoyed fishing and gardening and was a member of the St. Joseph County Democratic Club. A viewing and gathering of family and friends will be held from 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm Monday, October 15, 2018 in the Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery.
