Gerry John Upton, 99, of South Bend, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018, surrounded by family. Gerry was born near St. Louis, MO, on February 26, 1919. He proudly served his country during WWII as part of the United States Army Air Forces.

Gerry made his way to South Bend, IN, and married the love of his life, Dorothy (Kardel) Upton on August 25, 1952 and started a family. Gerry worked at Studebaker, Princes Homes, and later owned his own construction company, Upton Construction, where he built many homes here in South Bend. The couple moved to Tucson, AZ, in 1983 where they lived until moving back to South Bend in 2011 to be with their daughter and grandchildren.

Gerry loved building and fixing things, studying mathematics, and reading books all day to teach himself something new. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy, and their son, Jerry. Gerry will be deeply missed by his daughter Toni (KC) Pocius; grandchildren, Teresa and Matt (Ami) Pocius of South Bend; Marnie (Robert) Mix of VA; and Wayne, Erin, and Danielle Kardel of AZ; and great-grandchildren and his dog, Holly.

Palmer Funeral Homes—Hickey Chapel has been entrusted with his cremation. There will be a memorial service for Gerry and his wife at a later date. We miss you already and love you so much!
