Elwood Lee Long September 14, 1930 – January 17, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guest Book Elwood Lee Long September 14, 1930 – January 17, 2019 Elwood Long enjoyed many things during his 88 years. His faith journey started in high school with a gospel quartet from the Berea Church of Belvedere N.C. They sang regularly on a local radio station in Elizabeth City, N.C.

He and his brother Seth W. Long Jr. and sister, Virginia Mae Long Winslow grew up on a farm as they helped their father and mother. While in High School, he was a member of the Beta Club of Hertford High School and began driving a school bus after the end of WWII. After graduation, and in the fall of 1948, he attended Smithdale Massey Business College in Richmond VA.

Elwood met his wife Helen Marie Marriner in an adult Sunday School class, called The Timothy Class, at Hanover Ave. Christian Church. On November 25th, 1950, Elwood and Marie were married.

Members of the Timothy Class went on to provide leadership to the congregation over the next 25+ years. Elwood served at various times as Deacon, Chairman of the Board, Superintendent of Sunday School and later Elder for the congregation. He and Marie have kept in touch for 60+ years with those they first met in the Timothy Class.

During the Korean war Elwood joined the U.S. Air Force, received training and was assigned duty at W. Palm Beach. FL Later his assignment was in Tokyo Japan where he achieved the rank of Staff Sargent. When he was discharged from military service, and for the next 30 years, he worked for the Department of Defense.

At the start of retirement, Elwood and Marie lived in VA Beach and volunteered for the 24th St. Ocean Front Committee, a group formed to save open public space along the boardwalk. The group was able to establish a park on the ocean front which is still in use today. Later, Elwood and Marie moved to Strasburg, VA.

He joined the Sons of the Confederacy where he learned of and honored his Southern heritage and the Civil War. They moved to Winchester and continued to enjoy many civic activities during retirement. In the past 8 years, Elwood’s health declined after suffering a stroke.

The couple lived in assisted living facilities before finally being transferred to the Brookside Nursing Center in Warrenton in 2017. Elwood Long is survived by his wife of 68 years Marie Marriner Long, eldest son Stephen W. Long and wife Debra Conti of Satellite Beach, FL and Roger L. Long and wife Debbie Liberman of Warrenton VA. A memorial service for Mr. Long will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2019 at the First Christian Church, 75 Merrimans Lane Winchester, VA.
