Obituary for Erwin “Bud” M. Tester Erwin “Bud” M. Tester, 94, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Riverside Terrace. Bud was born August 2, 1924 in Waterloo, WI, the son of Martin and Augusta (Hahn) Tester. He graduated from Watertown High School where he played football and basketball, as well as playing baseball for the city team in the Central Wisconsin League.
After graduation, Bud entered the U.S. Navy where he was a Signalman. He served in the South Pacific and participated in six invasions during World War II. After his discharge, he enrolled in Carroll College, Waukesha, WI graduating in 1949.
Bud married Shirley I. Wendt on June 10, 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Watertown, WI. She predeceased him on August 30, 2018. Bud began his teaching career in Fennimore, WI, followed by Whitewater and Beloit, where he taught and was a counselor for 30 years, retiring in 1986.
While teaching, he earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He umpired baseball for local high schools, Beloit College, and the Central Wisconsin League. Bud was a member of the Beloit Education Association, Director of the Teacher’s Credit Union, coached Little League and Pony League.
He was President of the Beloit Boys Baseball Association, Beloit Booster Club, and the Beloit Quarter Century Club. During the summer, he was employed by the Beloit Recreation Department. Bud was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church teaching Sunday School, serving on various committees, and the church council.
Since his retirement, he was a member of the Beloit Area Retired Educator’s Association, and Key Club Advisor at Beloit Memorial High School. Bud was active with the Kiwanis serving as a former president and Peanut Day Chairman. He enjoyed dart ball, golf, bowling, and traveled extensively.
Survivors include his children, Thomas (Nancy) Tester of Princeton, IL, David (Jackie) Tester of Marietta, GA, and Jane (Jon) Lang of South Beloit, IL; grandchildren, Kelly (Jamie) Saeli of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Gregory (Jill) Tester of Madison, WI, Ashley (Joe) Neubert of Washington D.C. and Marc Tester of Acworth, GA, Amy (Jon) Smith, and Michael Lang of South Beloit, IL; seven great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Tester of Watertown, WI, and Janet DeGarmo of Kokomo, IN; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; grandchild, Brian Tester; two brothers Fred Tester and James Tester, five sisters Doris Kaus, Helen Pohlman, Isabelle Steinbrink, Marion Duell and Barbara Heiden. Funeral services for Bud will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2018 in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 749 Bluff St., Beloit, WI, with Pastor Tony Dusso officiating.
Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation of remembrance will be from 1:00 to 2:15 p.m. in the church. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.
