Princeville – Eugene Robert “Gene” Ely, 88, of Princeville, passed away at 4:00 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2018 at Heritage Health Therapy Services in Chillicothe. Gene was born on July 16, 1930 in Sparland, IL, the son of Fred J. and Christine (Merdian) Ely. He married Geraldine Felton on March 27, 1951 at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Peoria; she survives.

Gene was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Joseph Ely; three brothers; and two sisters. Gene served in the United States Navy as an aviation mechanic from 1951-1955 stationed on the USS Wright in Virginia and Pensacola, FL during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Peoria County Farm Bureau, Kickapoo Sportsman Club, and a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was a life-long Cubs fan and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Gene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kickapoo where a funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2018.

Fr. Joseph Dondanville will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the mass at the church.

Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kickapoo. Haskell-Hott Funeral Homes in Princeville is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St, Mary’s Catholic Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
