Evelyn (Bernstingle) Golden, 99, of Cumberland, passed away June 6, 2018 at home. She was the wife of the late Harold Golden, whom she married October 1, 1939. Born in Bridgeport, CT, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rose (Levine) Bernstingle.

She is survived by a daughter, Arlene Golden Gilbert of Cumberland; a son, Robert Golden of Buckeye, AZ; two granddaughters, Jessica Rose Golden and her husband Robert Toth, and Leslie MacNeill and her husband Michael; as well as two great-grandsons, Holden and Hudson MacNeill. She was the mother of the late Alan Golden, and the sister of the late Arthur Bernstingle. Mrs. Golden graduated from Cranston High School East, attended the Leland Powers School, and worked alongside her husband as a bookkeeper for Sam Golden & Son, Inc. for over 20 years.

She was a member of Congregation B’Nai Israel of Woonsocket, Hadassah, and Sisterhood. Evelyn loved the arts, especially playing the piano, art lessons, painting, sewing, and decorating. She sewed costumes for Arlene’s school, The Jasper School of Dance, and loved to decorate her house and all of her friends’ homes.

Some of her other interests included golfing, cooking, shopping, and claying for the RI Clay Guild as well as making Bottles of Hope for breast cancer patients. She also had a talent for transcribing braille for the blind and visually impaired. The Goldens wintered for 20 years on Singer Island, Florida, summered in the Cape, and loved to have parties, but Evelyn’s greatest joy in life was dancing with her husband, Harold.

He impressed her with his dancing at Narragansett Pier when they met, and they fell in love right away. Harold was her backbone throughout the hardest moments in her life, including the loss of her parents and their son’s personal challenges. Her cart truly lost a wheel when he passed away.

On his 90th birthday in 2002, Evelyn and her husband danced again for the first time since the loss of their son, Alan. Over many years of joy with her friends and family, she certainly proved that she could, in fact, “dance her way through life”. Private services for Evelyn were held under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St. Woonsocket.

Memorial contributions are graciously encouraged to be made to: The Jasper Fund for the Care and Rescue of Animals, c/o The Rhode Island Foundation, One Union Station, Providence, RI 02903.
