Obituary for Evelyn R. Bishop Evelyn R. Bishop, 92, passed away on September 24, 2018 due to complications related to Alzheimer’s. Evelyn died peacefully and is in Heaven now with her husband, Pierce (“P.J.”) Bishop, Jr. who preceded her in death. Evelyn leaves her son, Brian Bishop and his wife, Regina; daughter, Beverly Kelly and her husband, Billy; four grandchildren: Calvin Kelly, Kimberly Kelly Wood, Katie Katie Whelan, and Matthew Kelly; and three great grandchildren: William, Julia, and Wesley Wood.

Evelyn is also survived by Howard Moon of Laurel, whom she married in 2003, her sister, Patty Osbahr and a brother, Billy Porter both of New Jersey. Evelyn was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on May 21, 1926. She worked for the railroad in New Jersey during War World II where she met her future husband, PJ, who was in the Navy.

Soon after the war ended, Evelyn relocated with PJ to the Laurel area where she lived most of her life. In 2014, Evelyn moved to Florida to be close to her daughter for extra support and care. Evelyn was a consummate homemaker and also worked as a bookkeeper/sales associate at Quinn Pharmacy in the North Laurel Shopping Center.

She was an active member at Highland Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and worked with mission groups. She loved her church and stayed involved while living in Laurel. She enjoyed bird watching and belonged to the Audubon Society.

Evelyn served as President of DMA at the YWCO for several years. She loved poetry and would often recite poems recalled from her youth to friends and family. Evelyn’s family cherished her in many ways, but all attest to her remarkable gift of conversation.

Evelyn (“Mamaw” to the grandchildren) consistently and steadfastly shared her time, thoughts and love with her family both near and far by spoken and written word. A funeral service to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held Monday, October 1, 2018 at Memory Chapel in Laurel. There will be a viewing at 12:30pm followed with the service at 2:00pm led by Reverend Gene Douglas of Highland Baptist Church.
