Evelyn Schaaf Berg, 95, of Louisville passed away peacefully on Friday, January 26, 2019 with her family by her side. She was born in Erie, PA on April 21, 1923 to Arthur P. and Anna C. Schaaf. She met her husband, David, in Erie, PA when she spotted him in the halls of Academy High School.

They were high school sweethearts double dating with their life-long friends, in a 1934 Ford “Delilah” complete with rumble seat and running on a tank of 25 cent gas. After an 8 year courtship, they were married on May 11, 1946. In 1956 they moved to Louisville, when David was transferred by General Electric.

Louisville became home where she and Dave raised their children, Jim and Jane. They were married for 66 years–true love for sure! Ev’s first job was an assistant to the vice-president of Continental Rubber Company in Erie.

She started back to work when her daughter started high school, having been at home to listen to stories and be with her children. She worked for over 30 years with Welcome Wagon, welcoming countless new homeowners to Louisville, typically spending at least two hours often leaving as best friends! Ev, Dave and family went for over 20 years to Litchfield Beach, South Carolina staying in the “All in the Family” beach house.

Hours were spent combing the beach for her precious shells. Ev was very involved in volunteer work throughout her life, volunteering time to Little Sisters of the Poor, and St. Margaret Mary Parish and School. She became an Ursuline Associate while volunteering for over 20 years at the Marion Home on Ursuline Campus.

She was a member of Queen’s Daughter’s and Fifth Wheel. Ev had a ready smile for everyone she met, a very witty and fun loving spirit and an abiding faith. Her light, love and laughter were experienced and treasured by everyone who knew her.

Her grandchildren described her as compassionate, whimsical, witty, funny, merry and having an unfiltered sense of humor. Above all, she was devoted to her family and followed their activities involving herself actively in their lives. Family was immensely important to her.

Never did a holiday go by without extensive decorating, gift giving and lots of love and laughter. Her children and grandchildren meant the whole world to her and her love and caring will be so missed with memories living through her great-grandchildren. She was their beloved “Nanu”, and will live on in their hearts forever.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her loving husband, Dave; brother, David; infant sister, Helene and a special “auntie”, Helen. She had two children, James D. Berg (Joanne), Jane Ratterman (Tom); four grandchildren, David Berg (Liv), Lauren Berg (Tom DiMenna), Chris Ratterman (Maria) and Dan Ratterman; three great-grandchildren, Mary Elise and Paul and Ben, who share a birthday on the same day of June 27, 2018. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Liz Schaaf; two nephews, Larry and Danny and a niece, Renee of Erie.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 7813 Shelbyville Road with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 (her beloved husband’s birthday) at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, “in St. Matthews”. Memorial gifts in the form of contributions may be made to Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, Mass of the Air or Nazareth Home Newburg.
