Fatemeh Roushanghias (known as Mary) was born in Tehran, Iran on February 23, 1937, to Seyed Mohammad and Sekineh Roushanghias. Fatemeh departed this life on April 15, 2018. Fatemeh grew up in a small family with her parents and older sister Sedighe.

At the age of seventeen, Mary met and later married Mohammad Jafar Akhavein (known as John). Within a year of their marriage, they had their first child, Soheila and then four more children, Sinoosh, Sepehr, Sepide, and Saeid (known as Simon). Known and loved by her family, friends and associates for her passion for fashion, beauty and creativity, Mary enjoyed a career as a Hairdresser and Beautician, while her husband worked as an Officer of the Air Force.

Mary defied the odds of the age she lived in by having a successful business as the Owner-Operator of a Boutique selling women’s clothing, jewelry, and accessories. Her business skills, impeccable taste and solid relationship-building skills contributed greatly to the success of her business and the comfortable lifestyle enjoyed by her family. In the early 1990’s, Mary left with her husband, John and youngest, children Sepideh and Simon and ultimately settled in Kansas City, Missouri where she lived for the remainder of her life.

Mary was known by all for her kind and generous nature, great taste, beauty, delicious cooking, strength and independence, despite the many obstacles she faced including her age, language barriers, limited mobility and deteriorating health in her later years. Fatemeh “Mary” Roushanghias will be dearly missed by her husband, John; daughters: Soheila, Sinoosh, and Sepideh; her son, Simon; she will also be remembered as the loving grandmother of her eleven grandchildren: Pezhman, Shahnoosh, Atusa, Sahar, Shahab, Nazenin, Saman, Sarshar, Shahrokh, Effon and Golfam; thirteen great-grandchildren; and her legacy of love, strength and independence against all odds will continue to live on in all of them and everyone else who know her. Funeral service for Fatemeh “Mary” Roushanghias will be held Friday, April 20, 11:00 a.m. at the Lawrence A. Jones and Sons Funeral Chapel, 1800 E. Linwood Blvd.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel. Interment, Twelve Gates Cemetery.
