Mrs. Fern Randolph Smith, age 97, of Nebo, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Greendale Forest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Snow Hill, North Carolina. Fern was born in Yancey County on March 3, 1921 to the late Curtis and Jessie Higgins Randolph. A homemaker, she was also a faithful Army wife who enjoyed the travels she took in support of her beloved husband as he was deployed to various locations.

She loved her children and cared for and protected them as they moved from place to place. Fern was a faithful Christian and wherever she attended church over the years she dedicated herself to volunteer work, be it teaching Sunday School or acting as the church secretary. She loved to read.

She will be remembered as a blessing to her family and everyone who met her over her life time. Fern is proceeded in death by her husband of almost 55 years, Ward Smith, and a daughter Patricia Smith. She leaves behind her loving daughters, Ruth Coon and husband George of Douglasville, GA, and Elizabeth “Kay” Hunt and husband William of Grifton, NC; two grandchildren, Kenneth Coon of Germany, and Jessica Fern Hunt and husband Doug Graham of Seattle, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunny Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Doug McPeters officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Following the service, Fern will be laid to rest between her beloved Ward and Patricia in the church cemetery.
