Mrs. Wilda Thomas Poteat, age 81, of Marion, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills following a period of declining health. A native of Pikeville, TN. , she was born on September 9, 1937 to the late Earl and Billie Swafford Thomas.

Having earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education, she worked for a time for the N.C. Extension Service in McDowell County for nine years after which she taught school at Marion High School and later at West McDowell Junior High. Wilda retired in 1998 with 30 years of dedicated service. She faithfully attended Marion Church of Christ and taught Sunday School there for over 15 years.

She also volunteered at several of the local elementary schools in McDowell County after she had retired. Her husband of 47 years, Milledge “Mickey” Poteat, preceded her in death. Wilda leaves behind two daughters, Angelia Poteat Dearborn and husband Christopher of New Boston, NH, and Melissa Tesseniar and husband Dean of Bostic; her sister, Beverly Baccaro and husband Paul of Loudon, TN; and a granddaughter, Laurin Jessica Bradley of Bostic.

The family will receive friends Friday, December 21, 2018 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Marion Church of Christ. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the church with Rev. Will T. Winchester and Mr. Matthew Crawford officiating.

Burial will follow at McDowell Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Mickey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills at PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
