Robert Garland Steele, 88, husband of Rudy Lee Steele, died Thursday, May 17, 2018, at his residence, after an illness. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 19, 2018, at New Zion Baptist Church, Lake City, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Friday, May 18, 2018, at Carolina Funeral Home, Scranton.

Mr. Steele was born on May 7, 1930 in Florence County, son of the late Thomas Hamilton Steele and Pearl Jordan Steele. He was a graduate of Scranton High School and a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Steele was the retired co-owner of Southern Distributing Co. Inc. and was a lifetime member of New Zion Baptist Church and until his death was the oldest male member.

He was a former Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, and was a lifetime Deacon and Trustee. Mr. Steele was also a member of the Lake City Gideon Camp. Surviving are his wife, Rudy Lee Steele of Scranton; daughter, Susan (Jim Ervin) Matthews of Florence; son, Robbie (Marie) Steele of Scranton; grandchildren, Robin (Jamie) Parker, Ian Matthews, Jay (Stacey) Steele and Reade (Rachel) Steele; great grandchildren, Fisher and Fields Parker and Carly Steele; brother, Ben (Margie) Steele of Kingstree and sister-in-law, Clara Steele of Scranton.

Mr. Steele was preceded in death by a brother, Rudolph Steele. The family would like to extend a special thanks to McLeod Hospice, especially Heather Matthews, also, special friends, Janette Jones, Gloria Brown, Miss Fannie and Wilamenia Myers.
