George Austin Hemphill , 92, of Burlington, died at home on Monday, February 18, 2019. Born October 1, 1926, in Newport, IA, he was the son of George Austin and Nellie Mae Havenhill Hemphill. On October 16, 1949, he married Dorothy Irene Overton in First Presbyterian Church.

She passed on August 5, 2016. George was a self-employed independent carpenter for 25 years, moonlighted as a farmer for 43 years, as well as working at Standard Lumber and Midwest Biscuit company for several years. He was a 1944 graduate of Burlington High School.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a vibrant, family oriented person.

George loved to sing and was a former member of a Barbershop Quartet (SPEBSQSA). He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, especially their trips to Alaska. George was a member of the Southeast Iowa Bee Keepers.

Survivors include six sons: Richard (Mary) Hemphill of Davenport, Steven (Wilma) Hemphill of Burlington, Keith (Beverly) Hemphill of Cedar Rapids, Dale (Sue) Hemphill of Emerson, Paul Hemphill of Burlington, and Charles Hemphill of West Point; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harold “Bud” Hemphill of Mediapolis. Besides his wife, George was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert and sister, Ruth Wischmeier. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Mr. Hemphill will be 11:00 am Saturday, March 23, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church.
