SOUTH HADLEY George H. Wagner Jr., 87, of South Hadley, former longtime Holyoke resident, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield after a courageous fight with esophageal cancer. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late George H. and Ann (Flynn) Wagner and attended Holyoke High School. At the age of 17, George joined the United States Navy, serving in the Korean War from 1948-1952, for which he received various medals for his service.

He worked for the City of Holyoke Department of Public Works for many years, retiring after serving as a Level 3 Operator at the Sewage Treatment Plant. He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Holyoke, and a member of Holyoke Lodge of Elks # 902. George was the widower of Marjorie (Mayer) Wagner, who predeceased him in 1984.

He is survived by a son, Gary Wagner and his wife Cynthia, a daughter Donna Wagner, five grandchildren: Jason Wagner, Cailene Wagner, Kevin Wagner, Brianna Weltlich, and Victoria Weltlich, a great-grandson, Owen Wagner, two sisters: Dorothy Brunelle and Connie Hash, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, George was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Morrisette. The funeral will be held Friday, July 20th at 10:00 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Saint Jerome Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 19th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke, Inc. PO Box 1338, Holyoke MA 01041. The entire Wagner family would like to thank the staff at Wingate at West Springfield, Mercy Medical Center, and Sister Caritas Cancer Center, especially Dr. Kirtani, for the compassionate care they provided to George.
