Gertrude “Marie” Sitnik, 100, former longtime resident of Woonsocket, RI, left the home that she shared with her daughter and granddaughter on Farr Drive in Castleton for her forever home in Heaven on Thursday, May 10, 2018. She was born on April 17, 1918 in Woonsocket, RI, and was the daughter of Albert and Glorianna (Bruneault) Neveu. She was proudly employed for over 20 years at the W.T. Grant Company before beginning her family, and returned to work at the F.W. Woolworth Company in Woonsocket, RI years later upon finding herself with an empty nest.
She worked there until her retirement. Although she loved her job, she was often heard to say that her favorite job was being a mother and grandmother. At age 39, she married the man of her dreams, Matthew Sitnik, on July 4, 1957.
In her own words, he was a “good catch” and they shared 36 years of unrivaled bliss before he passed away in 1993. She was baptized and married at Precious Blood Catholic Church in Woonsocket, RI, and after her marriage, she joined her husband’s parish of St. Stanislaus Kostka, also in Woonsocket. Gertrude was a faithful servant of her Lord and prayed the rosary every day.
Before her death, she looked forward to being reunited in Heaven with her parents, Albert and Gloriana Neveu, her husband, Matthew Sitnik, her brothers Roland and Paul Neveu, and her doting son-in-law John Swarm. Her devotion to her family as well as to her faith has granted her the ability to spend the first Mother’s Day in 27 years with her own beloved mother. She will always be remembered by her daughter and granddaughters as the kindest, most nurturing, and joyous mother and grandmother anyone could ask for.
Life will continue but will never be the same without her warm presence. She will be greatly missed by all of those she left behind, including her loving daughter, Christine (Sitnik) Swarm, her cherished granddaughters, Emily Turgeon, Melissa Swarm, Christie Swarm, and Rachel Cobler, her best friend and sister, Violet Neveu, as well as her many nieces and nephews. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 N. Main Street, Fair Haven, VT.
