Harold “Hal” Alfred Johnson, age 81, of Appleton, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 3, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. Hal was born in Timmons, Ontario on July 24, 1937, to the late Alfred August and Anne (Brownlee) Johnson. After his schooling, Hal proudly served his country in the Canadian Army serving in the Electrical Mechanical Engineers Unit.

His military service took him to Germany where he met his wife, Waltruad “Val” Koch. The couple married in Germany on November 17, 1961 and enjoyed 57 years together. Hal worked as an Electrical Engineer for many years at American Can in Neenah, retiring in 1992.

After retirement, he worked as an independent contractor. His career took him all over the United States and for a short time the family lived in the Dominican Republic. Hal loved to travel, but his favorite trips always included his wife, Val.

Last winter and this winter, until the time of his illness, he and Val spent their winter in Lake Havasu City, AZ. It was not beneath Hal to call his kids in WI and gloat about the warm weather in AZ. He cleverly timed his calls just after a big snow storm.

He enjoyed tinkering with computers and electronics and always seemed to have a solution to any problem. He will be missed by his loving wife, Val, of Appleton; three sons: Lance (Lucy), of Black Creek, Greg (Amy), of Appleton, and Kyle, of Appleton; 4 sisters-in-law: Ingrid (Alfonse), Monika, Mechtild (Manfred), and Hildagard (Klaus); and a brother-in-law Fritz (Veronika). He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

Hal was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Karen, mother and father-in-law Fritz and Anna, and brother-in-law Herbert. The family invites friends to call at the Brettscheider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel to pay their respects, condolences or share a fond memory on Thursday, January 10th from 5:30-7:00pm followed by a short memorial service to celebrate Hal’s life. Inurnment will take place at Highland Memorial Park.
