Harold “Van” D. VanWinkle, 97, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2018 at The Good Samaritan Home. Van was born in Hatfield, Indiana on April 28, 1921 to the late “Rip” Cyrus W. and Faye (Tullis) VanWinkle. He was a World War II Veteran who honorably served in the Army stationed as a Coast Artillery Specialist in the Panama Canal Zone.

Van worked at Colonial Garden Center for 30 years where he ran the retail store on Green River Road. Before his retirement, Van… Read More » worked at the Colonial Nursery for 12 years. He loved spending time with his family in Bristol, Tennessee.

Van was an avid Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed playing Solitaire every morning with Jack Bullington. He was a devout member of Heritage Baptist Church. Van is survived by his daughter, Gayle L. Shoulders (Paul) of Evansville, IN; son, Robert “Bob” VanWinkle (Debra) of Newburgh, IN; sisters, Lucille Boyd, Mary Lou Martin (Tommy) and Georgia Parsley all of Rockport, IN; four grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Van was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Clara L. (Johnson) VanWinkle; parents; siblings, Buddy, Geneveive, Nelda and Ellen Gayle; and by granddaughter, Sharon Fletcher. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Park Lawn Cemetery, 1526 S. Green River Rd. , Evansville, IN 47715.

Friends may visit from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Browning Funeral Home and again from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Baptist Church, 1900 Lodge Ave. , Evansville, IN 47714.
