Fred was born May 11, 1930 in Sewickley, Pennsylvania to Harry Fredrick Horstman and Leona May Christy. He graduated from Coraopolis High School and attended Penn State University after serving in the Korean War from 1952-1955. He graduated from PSU in 1958 with a BA and 1977 with a Master’s in Therapeutic Recreation.

He worked in Hospital Therapeutic Recreation in Somerset and Laurelton State Hospitals in Pennsylvania from 1958 to 1977. He moved to Terre Haute, Indiana and taught Therapeutic Recreation at Indiana State University from 1977 to 1998. He received his Doctoral degree in Recreation Education from Indiana University.

Fred passed away on June 28, 2018. Services will be held at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church on Friday, July 6, 2018.

Visitation will be from 10:00am to 12:00 noon with memorial service at 12:00 p.m. Reverend Dennis Ticen will be officiating. Fred is survived by his wife, Sheila, and their six children; Michael, Jeffrey, Kenneth, Ellen, Peter Horstman and Julie Horstman Watson; twelve grandchildren; Jordan Blanc, Alex, Daniel, Melina, Zachery, and Lydia Horstman, Heather Horstman Brusalis, Sarah Horstman Low, Melissa Watson Jacobson, Lindsey, Mark, and Luke Watson; four great grandchildren; Noah and Oliver Blanc, Jessica Horstman, and Reuben Low. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association.
