Hazel Priest, 94, left this life for her eternal home on January 25, 2019 peacefully in her sleep at Mallard Cove Assisted Living in Petoskey. Hazel was born August 5, 1924, the daughter of Levi and Margaret Pankow. She grew up on the family farm and was proud to be a farmers daughter.

She graduated from Plymouth High School in 1942. On September 7, 1946, she married Clarence “Bud” Priest in Livonia. Hazel worked for Wayne County at the Wayne County Training School in Northville in payroll and human res.

Retiring in 1975 and in 1976 moving up north to God’s country. Hazel was a member of the Indian River Golf Club and played on many leagues. She was a long time volunteer at McLaren Hospital gift shop where she was affectionately called “Hazel nut” for her feisty spirit and sense of humor.

She enjoyed tending her many flowerbeds and made a great apple pie along with her famous chocolate chip cookies. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Carol Mattson (Mike Myers) of Petoskey; grandsons, Tyler Mattson of Alanson, and Travis (Analiese) Mattson of Grand Haven; great grandsons, Hunter and Theodore and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Bud Priest; and brothers, Kenneth and Floyd Pankow.

A private family service will take place in the summer at Oakhill Cemetery, Indian River overlooking the golf course. Friends and family wishing to make a charitable donation in Hazel’s memory are asked to consider the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society.
