Obituary for Helen Demetriou Eleni (Helen) Demetriou passed in peace on Saturday, December 15, 2018, surrounded by family. Helen was born on September 21, 1942 in London, England to Maria and Anastasios Demetriou. She spent her early years in Deal, England where her parents owned and ran a seafood restaurant.
Along with her parents and sister Patricia, Helen emigrated from England, crossing on the Queen Mary and arriving to New York on April 5, 1950. After a brief period in St. Augustine, FL, the family permanently settled in New York City. Helen attended Central Commercial High School on East 42nd Street and simultaneously began her 35-year career in Human Res and Benefits at MetLife, retiring in 1993.
Summers were spent with family and dear friends in Highlands, NJ. Helen enjoyed soaking up the sun along the Shrewsbury River and the big family dinners. She spoiled her nieces, Stacey and Cindy, taking them to the local amusement parks, always having change for candy at nearby Katz’s.
There were sleepovers in Astoria filled with shopping sprees and trips to the bakery. In countless other ways, Aunt Helen made Stacey and Cindy feel special and truly loved. Helen, along with her mother, moved from Astoria, Queens to Valley Cottage, NY in 1994.
She continued her career in Human Res working at KPMG in Montvale, NJ and then at St. Agatha Home in Nanuet, NY. Aunt Helen always put family first, never missing an important moment in the lives of her nieces, and great nieces and nephews. She arrived to every birthday celebration with an overflowing bag of gifts and a smile, and traveled to every graduation, sacrament and music recital.
Helen was a fixture in her chair at the dining room table, whether a holiday meal or Sunday dinner at her sister Pat’s home. She also cherished her friendship and many trips and outings with her very dear and devoted friend of over 50 years, Marie Durando. Helen will be fondly remembered for her generous and loving spirit, her sense of humor and her unwavering dedication to family and friends.
She had a quick wit, and was a wonderful sister and friend, and will forever be remembered as “the best aunt ever”. Helen is survived by her sister Patricia Boland and brother-in-law Kenneth Boland and their daughters Stacey Gee and Cynthia O’Dwyer, her nephews-in-law Thomas Gee and Bartley O’Dwyer, and her great nephews Christopher Giacopelli and Thomas Giacopelli, and great nieces Carli Giacopelli, Eveleen O’Dwyer and Vivienne O’Dwyer. She lives on in the hearts of her family, friends and all she touched.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 19th, 2-5pm and 7-9pm, at Hannemann Funeral Home 88 South Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960. The funeral mass will be held Thursday, December 20th, 10am, at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1 Maycrest Road, West Nyack, NY 10994. Interment will follow at Rockland Cemetery, 201 Kings Highway, Sparkill, NY 10976.
