Obituary for Henry “John” McGrath Henry “John” McGrath, a fifteen-year resident of Park City, passed away at the Abbington Senior Living Center, in Heber UT on April 6. John was born June 9, 1936 in NYC, where he spent most of his adult life. John was proud that he served in the Navy during the Korean War, from 1954-1957, and continued to serve the citizens of his hometown, in the NYCPD from 1961- 1981.

He rose to the rank of Detective, 1st Grade most notably in Brooklyn’s Homicide unit. John married Elizabeth Lang, in 1958, she preceded him in death in 1982. John obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

He retired from the Police Department and started a private investigating firm, Jonathon-Gordon Investigators. When it was time to truly retire, John moved to Utah to be closer to family. John’s desire to serve was evident thorough out his life.

Early in his retirement he volunteered at the University of Utah Hospital, in the Emergency Department and Huntsman Cancer Institute. To bring a smile, warm blanket or hot coffee to those in need were John’s trademark. He also spent many hours as a hospice volunteer and in the classrooms of his granddaughters.

John touched the lives of many, lending an ear, providing guidance, sharing his story or a meal. He greeted everyone with a smile, a handshake and a loud “hello”; sometimes in an Irish brogue or his strong NY accent. Regardless, John was glad to meet you!

John is survived by his daughter Dawn Young (Brad Casper) of Park City, son John McGrath of NYC, granddaughters Virginia and Lauren Young and son-in-law Peter Young. Also, many, many friends who although not blood related were family. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Abbington Senior Assisted Living, who provided compassionate and attentive care during a very difficult time.

And for those at Canyon Home and Hospice, who helped John find comfort and eased his pain. Please join in the celebration of John’s life Saturday April 14, at 2:00 pm at the Heber Cemetery. As per his request a gathering of friends, family food and drink will follow at the Midway Mercantile, in Midway Utah to share stories and a meal.

All are welcome!
