On March 9, 1946, he enlisted in the United States Army. During his time in the service, he provided transportation and attended cooking school in the military. He was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii for much of his enlisted time and would reminisce fondly about those days.

Henry was honorably discharged and is a veteran of World War II. He was very proud of his military service and we honor his service. After his military service, Henry pursued various career interests.

He worked for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Newport News, Virginia; Smith and Wesson Corporation in Springfield, Massachusetts; co-owned a restaurant with his brother in Colorado; and, worked at Northampton State Hospital, Northampton, Massachusetts. Henry lived in many states including North Carolina, Virginia, Massachusetts, Ohio and Colorado. He loved Springfield, Massachusetts and made it his home for many years.

Henry loved to travel. For many years, he frequently took road trips until his advancing age made long-distance travel impractical. Henry loved auto mechanics and often provided auto repair to friends and family.

Henry was a friendly, outgoing and loving man who enjoyed spending time with people. He also enjoyed his alone time and when an individual would call and ask him what he was doing, he would respond simply “Just sitting back, taking it easy”. Henry leaves 4 children as his legacy, Richard Murchison (Jeanine), Robert Murchison (Sheila), Andre Murchison (Tiffany), and, Sherri Phillips (Robert).

He also leaves many grandchildren and great grandchildren who will lovingly remember him. Henry will be missed by his five remaining siblings, Florence Campbell, Alma Murchison, Ida Byrd, George Murchison and Mary Owens. Henry was preceded in death by: his daughter, Doris Simmonds; his brothers, Benjamin Jefferson Murchison, Tellie Ward Murchison, Harvey Lee Murchison, Joe Lewis Murchison; John Wesley Murchison; his sisters, Marie Murchison, Catherine Murchison, Lillie Mae Barber; and, Mattie Brown.

Also left to mourn his passing are his beloved grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. We would be remiss if we did not mention his friend Leslie Bosworth and Nara Gibbs, his friend of 50+ years.
