BOARDMAN – Herbert E. Bartelmay, age 84, entered Heaven peacefully on Sunday, May 6, 2018. He was born July 28, 1933, in Youngstown to Roy and Margaret LaCelle Bartelmay, and spent the majority of his life in Boardman with his family. He was a proud 1951 graduate of South High School, and then served in the Army during the Korean War.
Herb returned to Youngstown and received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Youngstown State in 1958. There, he played for the Penguins varsity basketball team, and presided as President of Phi Gamma Fraternity. He received his Master of Education from Kent State in 1961, and then embarked on a lifelong career as an educator.
He taught and coached in Garrettsville before becoming an elementary principal there in 1961. He was a middle school principal in the Western Reserve School District for two years before becoming the first principal at Hilltop Elementary in Canfield. He spent 30 years there before retiring in 1996.
Herb was included in the 1970 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America. He was a charter member and past president of the Mahoning County Elementary Principals Association, and a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Herb spent many years as a member and bocce team player at the Youngstown Saxon Club.
Always a sports enthusiast, he played in a men’s softball league, but his passion was fishing. Herb and his friends made a yearly fishing trip to the Cabonga Reservoir in Quebec, Canada. When they weren’t fishing, the “guys” were playing Friday night poker, whether at Ralph Cannon’s house, or at the homes of each player.
His love of friends was only matched by his love of family. Herb and the Bartelmay siblings spent as much time planning a holiday gathering at his brother Mert’s house, as they did celebrating the actual holiday. He vacationed every summer with his extended family at Sparrow Lake in Ontario, Canada.
Always by his side was his dedicated wife Mary (“Butchie”), with whom he would have celebrated 55 years of marriage this summer. He also leaves behind his children, Kristin (Tim) Harpe of Columbus, Roy Bartelmay of Baltimore and Karen (Jeff) Salajko of Columbus and eight grandchildren. Meg, Tucker, Pete, Hayden, Michaella, Kate, J.J. and Luke all enjoyed grandpa’s humor and him slipping them a few dollars during a visit.
He is also survived by brother Merton Bartelmay and sister Alma Patterson. Brothers LeRoy and Norm Bartelmay and sisters Edythe Nagy, Margaret and Gladys Bartelmay were there to welcome Herb through the Heavenly gates. The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Austintown, where he resided for nearly two years, and Hospice of the Valley’s Leslie and Janet for their compassion.
The family requests any donations that are made go to the Alzheimer’s Association in Herb’s honor at www. alz.org or Hospice of the Valley. A memorial service will be held at the Davis Becker Funeral Home at 8536 Market St. in Boardman at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, with a Celebration of Life from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the funeral home’s Family Center.
