He was born September 27, 1938, in Belle Fourche, SD, to Eldred and Martha (Durst) Johnson. As a young boy he grew up on a ranch, enjoying his pet skunk and in high school he was well known for racing around town in his ’56 Ford.

After high school he moved to Wyoming and worked at Hauber Mine, and later returned to Belle Fourche working as a heavy equipment operator. Herb also enjoyed working at his campground and flying through the skies in his small plane…which he later crashed. In 1961 he married Dorothy (Mitchell) Callies and they welcomed their daughter Michele in October 1962.

In June of 1975 Herb married the love of his life, Charlotte Bruggeman and lovingly welcomed his step-daughter Denise. After retiring, Herb and Charlotte enjoyed their winters being active snowbirds in the great state of Texas. Herb will fondly be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and an avid lover of camping, fishing, hunting, and sharing good jokes with family and friends.

Some of Herb’s fondest memories are hunting with his daughter Michele and step-daughter Denise. He was proud to teach the both of them how to shoot.
