Hortencia’s Obituary Hortencia (Tencha) Mesa Gilpin, 87, of Boyce, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Winchester Medical Center. Tencha was born April 18, 1931 in El Paso, Texas, daughter of Jose Jesus and Hortencia Pro Mesa. She went to Loretto Academy High School and graduated in 1948.

She married William A. Heard, Jr. on September 20, 1952. Her second marriage was to M. Tyson Gilpin on November 5, 1977. Tencha was active in the community: serving two terms as President of the Middleburg Community Center and started the endowment fund and is currently an honorary member.

She served as President of the Middleburg Tennis Club and the Winchester-Clarke County Garden Club. She served as Chairman of Garden Week, has been a senior warden at Christ Church in Millwood, Virginia, and served on the board at Long Branch for over 20 years. Tencha is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, M. Tyson Gilpin.

Tencha is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, William A. and Dorothy Heard of Derwood, MD and Joaquin M. and Connie Heard of Boyce, VA; sisters, Corrina Preito of California and Uva Stoner and her husband, William, of Dallas, TX; brothers, Jose Mesa, Jr. and his life partner, Heinz Webber and Richard Mesa and his wife, Linda, all of El Paso, TX; grandchildren, Wyatt Heard and his wife, Alexandra, of Leesburg, VA, Halley Smajkan and her husband, Admir, of Richmond, and William and Emily Heard, both of Derwood, MD; and a great-granddaughter, Ava Heard. A memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 8, 2019 at Christ Church, Millwood, VA with The Very Rev. Matt Rhodes officiating.

Burial will follow in Old Chapel Cemetery, Millwood. Memorial contributions may be made to Long Branch Historic House and Farm, PO Box 241, Millwood, Virginia 22646 or to the American Parkinson Disease Association, National Office, 135 Parkinson Ave. , Staten Island, NY, 10305.
