Howard Wallace Carper, 81, of Abingdon, MD, died Thursday, February 14, 2019, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Bel Air, MD. Born September 22, 1937, in Franklin Twp. , PA, he was the son of the late Samuel and Mary (Harpster) Carper.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane (Swauger) Carper, October 22, 2003, whom he married August 4, 1973; one son, Richard Paul Carper; five brothers, Arther, Earl, Norman, Percy and Wilson Carper; two sisters, Aritta Couch and Geraldine Meek. Mr. Carper was a union carpenter for Local 101, retiring after 38 years of service and a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran, where he was a Helicopter Mechanic in Atsugi, Japan, receiving the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of the Patterson Park Baptist Church. He was known for being a highly skilled carpenter and he enjoyed teaching others his craft. Early in his career, he owned his own residential construction company, Carper Contracting and built several houses in the Western MD area.

He eventually retired from the Poole & Kent Corporation in 1999. Howard was known for the great love he had for his family and doing for others. He never met a stranger.

He is survived by one son, Harold (Erin) Carper, Baltimore, MD; five daughters, twins, Hope D. Carper and Faith D. Carper, both of Abingdon; Yvonne (Buck) Cowdry, Rockledge, FL; Deborah (Robert) Ahrens and Patricia Moore, all of Melbourne, FL; two sisters, Sophronia David and Alberta Huff, both of Altoona, PA; four grandchildren, Ashley Carper, Brittany Carper, Richard Carper, Jr. and Alexis Carper. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, MD, on Wednesday and Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday, February 22, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Scott Rush officiating. Interment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, MD.

Military graveside rites will be accorded by Fort Cumberland Post 13, American Legion, Cumberland, MD.
