Jacob’s Obituary Minerva — Jacob Dallas Norton, 92, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2019, with his loved ones by his side. Born on March 14, 1926, in Bolton Landing, NY, he was the son of Clarence and Elizabeth Butler. He served in the United States Navy between 1942 and 1945, seeing active combat during World War II and reaching the position of Head Gunner on the LST 706.

Jacob earned his BSN and Master’s in Environmental Engineering. He went on to become the Superintendent of Water Pollution Control for the city of West Haven, CT, and was also the owner of West Haven Appliance and Pottersville Drug and Sundries. He was the past president of the Improved Order of Red Mon, a Fraternal organization modeled after rituals and regalia by American Indians, and former member of the American Legion in West Haven, CT.

Jacob married Josephine Keiran Norton, whom he met at the age of 16, in Derby, CT. He loved taking long rides with his wife, servicing and repairing heavy machinery, and his many vehicles and yard equipment. He was considered a jack-of-all-trades.

Jacob Norton was a wonderful father and loving husband. He believed in hard work. He put himself through college while working several full-time jobs, not only becoming an environmental engineer, but also starting several businesses along with his wife of 75 years.

Jacob had two final wishes, both of which were granted: to remain in the home that he loved and to pass in his sleep. His wife was his extraordinary caregiver. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Dallas Jacob Norton; one sister, Elizabeth Norton, and eight brothers, Junior, Harold, Robert, Forest, Morris and Doug Butler, and Levi and Clayton Norton.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Josephine Norton of Minerva, NY; his son, Alan George Norton of CA; his daughter, Chicky Barilli and her husband, Steve, of Minerva, NY; his grandchildren, Bobby Norton Lakus of Lake George, NY, and Melissa Lakus of Brooklyn, NY; his great-grandson, Alexander Melo Lakus; sister, Helen Butler of Houston, TX; brother, David Butler and his wife, Rebecca, of Thurman, NY; also many nieces and nephews in NY State, CT, FL, CA, VA and TX. A celebration of life will be held at the home of Jacob and Josephine at a future date. The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Karen Cook, a social worker at Glens Falls Hospital, for her advice, support and the time spent guiding us thru this process.

Also, to his hospice nurses, Courtney, Sue, Hadley and Christi for the wonderful care given, to Andrew Morrison, the nurse manager at HHHN, for his help and guidance, and to Casey LaFlure for her kindness and compassion. In loving memory of Jacob, contributions may be made to High Peaks Hospice, 454 Glen St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.
