Funeral Service for James E. Hudson, 70 of Somerville will be Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Peck Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00PM with Rev. Cody Hyde officiating with burial in Forest Chapel Cemetery and Peck Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00PM-8:00PM at the funeral home.
Mr. Hudson was born November 4, 1948 in Winston County to Bobbie Dean Hunter Clark. He passed away Friday May 10, 2019 at his residence. In all of his work, James Hudson served his community.
He worked in the Restaurant industry, rode an Ambulance, and had a long career in Law Enforcement. He was a long time member of the F.O.P. and was president of local Fraternal Order of Police Decatur Lodge 46. He also served twice as the Northern District Vice President of the Alabama Narcotics Officers Association.
When he gave his heart to Jesus, James would regularly pick up prisoners from the jail on Sunday mornings to take them to church so they could hear and respond to the good news as he had. During his twenty-seven year tenure with the Morgan County Sherriff’s Office, James served in many Capacities, beginning as a Road Deputy. Early in his career he served as Chief Deputy.
H later moved into Vice & Narcotics Division as a lieutenant, even training his own drug dog. James was placed in Criminal Investigations, then was made Captain of the East District under Sherriff Steve Crabbe where he built many positive relationships across Morgan County through true community policy. His expertise was needed again in investigation, and so James moved back to that division and served there as Captain until his retirement in 2002.
To say James enjoyed hunting and fishing is a gross understatement. He had set up a second home at his deer camp he shared with anywhere from four to ten other men. He took great pride in being the camp chef.
His biscuits and gravy are famous across the state. James had much joy in the friendships that developed and deepened at and because of the deer camp. Though he did not get a deer in the last two years he hunted, he has many trophies in his garage because that was as far as they were allowed.
James Hudson was most proud of his family. He took much of the household responsibilities and helped his mother care for his younger brother and sister at a young age. He loved them deeply and had great joy in telling others the accomplishments of his wife, children, and grandchildren, but especially his son, who followed in his footsteps with a career in law enforcement himself.
