James’ Obituary James E. (Ed) Dowling, Sr., passed away March 13, 2019 at Memorial Satilla Health after a short illness. He was born April 27, 1925 in Waycross, Georgia. He was raised in Waycross and Ware County, Georgia and graduated from Wacona High School in 1942, at 17 years of age.

He went to work for the ACL Railroad July 1942 as a machinist apprentice. He held several supervisory positions at several locations at the ACL and SCL Railroad in the machinist department. He retired in 1983 as Master Mechanic or as the chief mechanical office of the SCL Railroad, Tampa Division.

He loved to work for the railroad and it was an important part of his life. He was a Mason for 65 years having memberships in Frank C. Folks Lodge #192, Waycross Lodge #305 and Blackshear Masonic Lodge #270. He was a past master of Frank C. Folks Lodge #192, a York rite and a 32 degree Scottish rite Mason.

He was a member of Hasan Temple of Albany Shrine. He served in the U.S. Army from November 1943 until April 1946. He was a Sgt.

in the Shop Company of the 732nd Railway Operating Battalion. After D Day 1944, he operated the railroads in France and Germany along with several other Battalions. The 732nd was contracted to supply gas and ammo to the 3rd Army and was the first railroad outfit to cross the Rhine River into Germany.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jimmie Lee Dowling; his parents, Tom and Minnie Lee (Rouse) Dowling; and his brother Charles Dowling. Survivors include his sons, James E. (Ed) Dowling, Jr. (wife Leea) of Waycross, GA; Jimmy W. Dowling (Brenda Sharp) of Rincon, GA. Six grandchildren: Dr. Carrie Lee Dowling, Cross, SC; Laurelee Dowling, St. Simons Island, GA; Dr. James L. Dowling, Athens, Georgia (wife Jennifer); J.W. Dowling (wife Ashley), Cross, SC; Shelby Dowling, Rincon, GA; and Georgia Dowling, Rincon, GA.

Four great grandchildren: Landyn Dowling, Cross, SC; Kasey Dowling, Cross, SC; Miles Dowling, Athens, GA; Colton (Roo) Dowling, Athens, GA; and two foster great grandchildren. A Masonic and Military graveside service will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Friday, March 15, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Frank C.
