Obituary for James “Jim” Carpenter Sr. passed away in peace on June 22nd at the age of 66 surrounded by family at the Episcopal Church Home. Jim was born on March 17th, 1952, in Owensboro to John and Jean (Bryant) Carpenter. He graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School in 1970 and Ole Miss in 1974.

On August 24th, 1974, he married his college sweet heart, Susan (Sullivan) Carpenter. Jim worked for Glenmore Distillers after college, moving from Memphis to Napa Valley, before eventually moving to Louisville taking on the role of General Manager at the Louisville operation of his family’s company, Bryant Distributing, a wholesaler of beer, spirits and wine. Jim loved his family, his work, his church, and gardening with Susan.

He and Susan have been members of the St. Albert parish since they moved to Louisville in 1979 and he has played countless roles in the Church Community from Ombudsman to President of the Parish Council. Jim loved to golf and spend time with his grandchildren. He was an enthusiastic fan of UK Basketball and was passionately optimistic in all endeavors.

Jim’s friends describe him as a consummate gentleman who spent his life lifting others. Jim is survived by his wife Susan of 44 years, his sons Jimmy Carpenter, Clay Carpenter, Chris (Alexandra Cuellar) Carpenter; grandchildren Christopher, Lucas, Allegra, and Olivia Cuellar- Carpenter; brothers, John A. (Sherry) Carpenter, Jeff (Marcia) Carpenter. Warm thanks to Dr. Jane Cornett and the staff at The Episcopal Home along with the staff at Hallmark House for their compassion and care in Jim’s final days.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 29th, 2018 at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 1395 Girard Drive with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 28th, 2018 at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road in St. Matthews.
